Cook It: My new cookbook & way of life
Since my garden inspiration, I have really embraced the idea of going all natural or organic with our food (and eventually all of the products in our lives). I never really thought about all of the chemicals and crap in our food until recently. It is simply ridiculous that you can’t even pronounce half of the ingredients in the stuff we put in our bodies. I truly believe that all of this chemical consumption is what causes diseases like cancer and autism (it may not be the sole cause but it can’t help). The only thing that sucks about going organic or natural is the cost. How fair is it that the junk that is horrible for you is dirt cheap but the stuff that is good is crazy high in price. I actually saw a box of mac and cheese for $3.97…$3.97, are you kidding me? No organic mac and cheese for this family! I did figure that if we cook our meals and stop going for the fast food grub we would still be saving money buying natural/organic stuff. We found a really great Farmer’s Market near us that has excellent prices and everything you can think of so that is a plus in the budget.
Yep, I realize that to some I may sound like some granola loving tree hugger (which I am normally not) but this all just hit me one day and I couldn’t shake this “family mission” for lack of a better word. Not only has this made me feel more healthy but I have a renewed passion for cooking which was pretty much nonexistent before now. The Baconator is digging this because now he has some help in the kitchen. So, I will be sharing some of the recipes that The Baconator and I have made with all natural ingredients (from garden to plate), fun articles, gadgets and whatever else I find.
One of my first finds is Great Food Fast (from the kitchens of Martha Stewart so you know it rocks). I have had this book for almost a year and never really did anything with it. You see I was more of a watcher when it came to cooking. I loved watching Food Network but hated actually going into the kitchen (except to bake). I also love food photography so if I happen to be at the bookstore and see a cool cookbook I usually buy it (weird I know) and this was from one of those trips.
It has a bunch of great recipes that I plan to share over the coming weeks. I think we have tried about 8 now and only had 1 we weren’t thrilled with. The first recipe is Greek -Style Mini Lamb Burgers and they are to die for…hopefully I will get a chance to post that tomorrow. Hope you enjoy the new feature!
Oh and we have one tomato in our garden…I was so excited when I saw that little guy!
